Is the Thai king going to die soon?

The word on the internet is that King Bhumibol Adulyadej is ill, very ill. In Thai forums and chats, Thai people describe King Bhumibol's death as "imminent". And, judging by some of the comments, not all Thais are sad at the prospect of their king's death. But why the sudden interest in king Bhumibol's health?

It all started in December of 2008. When, as this video from Reuters reveals, king Bhumibol adulyadej celebrated his 81st birthday. However, this birthday was unlike all others before. For months, Thailand had been experiencing political convulsions and many looked forward to their monarch's birthday speech for "guidance".

The Thai king, however, remained silent. For the very first time, there was no speech. The excuse? A "sore throat". Since them, others within the Thai royal family have been dropping hints about king Bhumibol's "bad" health. Queen Sirikit recently made a speech during her birthday bash, in which she said that her husband was not as "strong as he once was".

To put the tin hat on it, just a few days ago the Thai king went into hospital for what was describe as a "routine" medical check up, though the Thai media gave little information about the results of the check up. This secrecy didn't help matters.

Is it any wonder them, that speculation about the Thai king's health is rife? Are we seeing the beginning of the end for the world's longest reinging monarch? Is king Bhumibol now close to death? Thais seem to think so. Just think, if news of King Bhumibol's demise is true, Thailand will soon have a porn star as a queen and a sex maniac as a king.

What of Thailand's lese majeste law then? My guess is that this law will be enforced by Thai police even more strictly, with politically motivated trials on a weekly basis. The Thai Clown Prince (no it's not a spelling mistake) has plenty to hide. And even if he didn't, it's a handy little law to stop any political dissent on the part of Thailand's Red Shirts.

OMG!!! Long Live the King!! Please!!
